Defects
Wane
It normally belongs to the trunk extreme located near the wood.
It reduces considerably the quality of this material.
Cracks
It refers to the separation of the wood fibers and therefore reduces wood resistance.
This is caused by wood tensions in cutting and transportation, drying or sawing.
Blue stain
The bluish appearance, sometimes called blue stain, and the mold are caused
by the fungus that vigorously grow in cut trees and in serrated wood, and
have a discoloring unpleasant look. Affected wood loose a huge value.
Knothole
These are holes of various sizes and forms, normally caused by
the detachment of a dead knot.
Pith
It's the interior part of the trunk. It can be classified as firm pith,
without material loss, or chambered pith, with material loss.
Spot
Abnormal tissue development that connects the pith with the aciculars - a white,
hardly visible sport, and a clearly visible Brown spot - with material loss.
Knots
It's the area a brunch, presented like a knot or dead knot.
Resin Pocket
Cavities, formed between the rings, full with resin, generally formed in a long shape.
They can produce less resistance or lack of adherence in the rings.
Bad planing
It is the surface of the wood that is not totally extracted when planning the material.
It has smaller dimension, and bad surface quality.
Checks
A common decorative characteristic of hard maple and sometimes of other species.
It is conical, formed in the external annual rings, and has the same shape probably
for many years.
